What is the difference between a bunch of heavily armed outlaws building a base, and “trading” with their neighbors and a (polity? Empire?) other then scale and treaties?

I told him about Advanced D&D, which we played in the 80s & which this kid had heard of through ye olde mists of tyme. And then he stumped me: He asked if Githyanki had been featured in the original Monster Manual. I don't know! I cried.

But now a friend reminds me that Githyanki were THE COVER of the original FIEND FOLIO. And who made them? @cstross did.

Back to the magical land of Nicea, I’m working on the line work for the jungles to the East, an excuse to draw lots of dinosaurs in the dense rainforest. It’s for dungeons and dragons so the land need to invite exploration. The jungle is criss crossed by rivers, with tall rock formations and mysterious ziggurats. So I'd looked at the Dreamland RPG playtest rules before but I'd somehow bounced off them. This time, I dove in like a starving ghoul in a ripe corpse - maybe because of Jason's cute explanatory comics?

In any case, it's really good, and I'm going to take advantage of the generous quickstart documents and run a game or two soon. I can't wait to see how the Word cards mechanics affect the tone of the game.

I found another scifi novel that would make a great background world for a #TTRPG
Elegy Beach by Steven R. Boyett. A sequel to his novel Ariel.

Similar to the game ShadowRun, where one fine day the universe changes, magic works, and all these classics fantasy creatures spring to life. But without the cyberpunk and organized crime, and with more of The Postman.

The interesting part for me is magic like a computer language, with for-next loops and macros.
