An extremely detailed diagram of the history of Science Fiction. The diagram has a rather monstrous aspect, with tentacle-like roots and branches. On the upper left corner are found the roots of the diagram: Fear and Wonder, giving way to Animism and Legend. Other portals into the diagram are Philosophy, Art, Exploration and Observation. These roots converge and possibly interact with other concepts such as the Enlightment, Science, Utopias, Romantic Movements. Important science fiction works, authors and genres emerge on the way, amidst a vast quantity of other entries: the Gothic Novel, Frankenstein, Jules Vernes, H.G. Wells, Edgar Allan Poe, Science Adventure, Fantasy Adventure, Alice in Wonderland, Weird Tales, Pulp Magazines, Astounding Science Fiction, Galaxy Magazine, H.P. Lovecraft, Sword+Sorcery, Modern Horrror, Isaac Asimov, Philip K. Dick, Dune, Space Opera, Cyber Punk, Star Wars, Alien, Terminator, 2001 Space Odissey, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Total Recall, J.R.R. Tolkien, Dracula, Metropolis, King Kong, Aldous Huxley, and so on. A timeline is indicated on the upper and lower boundaries of the diagram.

Ok, maybe some of you trekkers can explain for me:

Why are none of the buttons ever labeled? Is there a canon reason for it? Surely there's at least some fan theories, right?

Is there a universal color-code that Starfleet uses?

Volume 4 Episode 3 – Page 29 Transcript
The following is a transcript for Cosmic Dash Volume 4, Episode 3 – Page 29.

Panel One

The Slauve is secure behind an energy shield. Any shots seem to dissipate harmlessly off the green energy field. Mara seems to be running into position.

Slauve: I see ya girlie! I got a dampening shield! Can’t get past it!

Panel Two

Mara raises her gun, the same gun she had modified with a button press on the previous page. She winks, and ionic energy forms at the end of the gun.

Mara: I was counting on it.

SFX: WHRRRR CLICK

Panel Three

Mara unleashes an ionic shot at the Slauve, electrifying him in an aura of blue energy.

Slauve: NNNNARGH!

Panel Four

Mara and Illyana approach the Slauve. Smoke is radiating off of him as he lies sprawled on the ground.

Illyana: How’d you manage that?

Panel Five

Mara and Illyana begin to swap stories.

Mara: Just a little science. Forcing the shield to cycle leaves it weak to an ionic shot. Just a little mod that Dash threw on my blasters.

Illyana: Romantic.

Panel Six

The Slauve is unconscious and smoke radiates off of his body.

Illyana (off-screen): Y’know… my rifle was an anniversary gift.

Mara: That’s pretty cool. How heavy is it?

Did you know that #invisibility cloaks are #real?

From the 2nd c's Cap of Hades to #Marvel 's Invisible Woman, magic that renders one #invisible is a common theme in #mythology & #scifi.

In 2006, #theoretical #physicist John Pendry figured out that light could be bent around an object so that it renders it invisible.
This led to many advancements in metamaterial science, known as 'metamaterial cloaking'.

I've enjoyed this talk by Pendry: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VO6IrynhjKs [start: 4:43min]

We just finished playing the last few turns of our game of Terraforming Mars from last week and it was INSANE - Final score was 199 to 159 (I lost 😞 ) but that's still my best score by far. Almost the entire board was filled up too - mostly by my opponent John, who unleashed a deluge of cities and forests (12 cities were placed in total in the last three turns of the game!). On the card side, I was doing a lot with the Floaters, John was big on the animals/life cards. I did manage to pull off some big plays in the last few turns - I think we ended up playing for a total of 13-15 generations? I was vastly outmatched in points from what I call the "ground game" (cities and forests) but aside from that we wouldn't have been too far apart in points. I just find it hard to concentrate on both the cards and the ground game - I tend to just stick with one (usually the cards) and leave it til too late to start actually terraforming Mars itself. John did also start with two Preludes that gave him a big leg up in starting production too which probably helped him a lot.

Still I don't feel too bad about that considering that's my best score so far and I felt like I knew what I was doing. Maybe four intervening years of gaming experience was useful 😊

Anything controversial in there? Any I've missed?

Boost phase announcement!

A fun #Discourse forum project I've been working on:

TASAT — There's A Story About That — is a science fiction community initiative from scientist & author David Brin (Earth, Startide Rising, The Postman.)

The mission: to connect highly-placed individuals facing challenging questions to a hive-mind of sci-fi readers and viewers who might recall a story exploring outcomes of a similar scenario.

After extensive beta testing with a small group, it's time to expand our base.

The only qualification? Having read lots of stories. Watched lots of flicks. Played bunches of realistic games.

Visit https://tasat.org/ for a full intro from Dr. Brin, and a link to explore the forum. *Help sci fi to help the world be ready for the unexpected!*

Looking a bit for some #books suggestions. I've been thinking of trying to fill out my #ebooks library more. I need to have a huge collection of stuff I'd be able to access on my tablet (which I can easily charge via solar power) if I lost access to a lot of things (such as Internet...)

What I'd really like to look for more of right now are particularly #Fantasy novels, but maybe a bit of #Scifi as well. But one thing I'd really like to look more fore is the stuff that is less "gritty." I'm tired of so many books focusing so hard on suffering, torture, good people driven bad, etc. More of the stuff where you know in the end the good guys will win and they won't compromise on what they know is right, even if it may be really hard along the way.

Maybe some cozy stuff too?

Yeesh, these Babylon 5 TV movies are ... not great. Just watched River of Souls (1999). The production values were somewhat lower in the pilot (The Gathering, 1998), as you'd expect, but the writing, acting and overall vibe was significantly better.

Would I be missing much if I skipped A Call to Arms (1999) and went straight so season 6? Would I be better to quit white I'm ahead and pretend everything made after season 5 is fanfic?

In the process of redesigning this ship. I'm glad I was able to keep the over-all look and feel of the ship, while greatly simplifying its structure by changing the spherical tanks to pill-shapes #scifi#Blender
