but, they could take a hint from x and allow users to see engagement numbers...

I’m curious to know if the owner of a service like a #Mastodon instance outside the EU could reasonably claim that they are outside the scope of the #DigitalServicesAct by configuring the service to block of IP ranges known to originate from EU geographies.

Mastodon (possibly) getting a dedicated Trust and Safety role restores some of my hope for the future of the fediverse.

I think the team has been pulled into too many directions by people asking for some really great and important features, but if you build a network where people don't feel safe, there soon won't be anyone to use those features.

This is a step in the right direction

When you're helping folks move to #Mastodon, please also help them see that mastodon.social is a big island, but not the only island, and unfortunately a very problematic source of spam and abuse due to poor moderation (lots of us are currently dealing with fresh waves of ick originating there).

Many, many smaller instances have blocked it for very good reasons.

Please talk up the smaller, well-connected communities working hard to provide safe and friendly spaces. :)
