Light sabers are very odd, physically. It's never clear what they are, exactly. Light, of course, doesn't work that way.

Not only is it weird that they extend and stop at a fixed distance, but also, they apparently can impact each other, like matter. A light beam will happily pass right through another, without effect.

Some kind of contained plasma is more likely. But that wouldn't impact rigidly, either.
