We can see ten robots rather crowded on a tiny boat in space. One of these robots is holding a flag that is slowly dissolving. They are from various galaxy regions and have different looks (from large to small, from one eye to three, humanoid and animallike..) and precious traditions. Thanks to the universal translator, not a necessary but a helpful invention, they can work together without any misunderstandings to get through these difficult times. They need to stick together because their surroundings are being destroyed. Far away, we can see an exploding planet, hot lava, and smoke. All hope is lying in their future. Together they will have a chance to find a new place to exist and build more robots.

02.12.2024 What are the 3 most important things for a traveler to take to the setting of your story?

Military: your weapon, your armor, your Holo.

Civilian: your Holo, a backpack, interspecies travel Pharmacy.
There are 72 species in the Union and their home planets/colonies, if they are not outright intoxicating to your species, they can start allergic reactions, you may not stand their food. Believe me travel diarrhea is even worse if your body waste could kill an alien ecosystem.

Holo are like mobile phones today, if you add all your IDs, licenses, a local cluster communication device, environmental scanner, micro forge and and Swiss army tool box into it. So yeah you should keep it on you.

#FinishedReading this great mess of a book. The first act is a nearly plot-free wall of exposition that I only stuck with because I've enjoyed other #NealStephenson before. The second act, with its focus on the character of Nell and her 'magical' book, really clicked me for me and sucked me in. And then the final act was an avalanche of plot developments and the characters went missing. Disappointing. #Bookstodon#SciFi @bookstodon

For a bit of clarification that I make in the post, this is a speech given at the height of the New Wave movement by an author who started writing in the 1930s (and I would argue, would also be inspired to push boundaries a bit with his own late 60s and early 70s generic blurring).
