I very much like the idea of a #ttrpg sandbox campaign, set in a Sword & Sorcery world in the style of Conan, Elric, and Morrowind.

The biggest challenge that always stopped me from doing it is getting an understanding of why players would want to wander far and wide through such a world, and what they would say what the goals are their characters are after.
Just exploring the next hex because there's nothing else to do sounds boring. The characters would have to want something they are after.

A mild (or severe) obsession with needing to find more wonders of sorcery and the beyond, and gaining some small form of understanding seems like a decent enough theme to build parties of diverse characters around.
But I feel then the world would have to have some interesting answers to give to reward the search. And I find that actually a pretty hard part in creating a world.

As a big Kenshi fan, doing something like a pen and paper Kenshi could be a fun idea.

In Kenshi, everything is driven by the need for food. With its harsh desert environment, it's impossible to just find food in the wilderness. Hunting is possible, but early on even a goat can kill half a dozen characters. That means building a home and growing your own food, or finding a source of money to buy food. But the hunger meter never stops and you always have to be working towards more food.

Something comparable that forces players to take some kind of work, any kind of work, even when it sounds shitty first, could be an effective tool to keep the ball rolling when the previous adventure didn't naturally lead into the next.
