My pet annoyance in SF settings is the Star Trek transporter.
They invented it to avoid needing shuttle trip sequences in every episode. What they got instead was a technology with mind-blowing implications that they NEVER paid the least attention to.

As soon as transporter tech gets out to the universe at large (and of course it would), some folks will find Bad Things to use it for.

Remote-control kidnapping. Remote-control bank / warehouse / treasury robbery. Assault troops (or warheads) delivered right inside the enemy's board room.

In Larry Niven's The Theory and Practice of Teleportation, if you have a cold war planet with two or more superpowers, if they invent a transporter that does not require a transmitter or does not require a receiver, you quickly get a war where the planet is bombed into a state where the technology level is incapable of supporting transporters.
