Staying informed in the US is not going to get easier anytime soon, especially as old standbys fall to billionaires or preemptive obedience to the authoritarian regime.

I've assembled a list of 40+ outlets that I find valuable, prominently featuring:

* nonprofit, co-operative, and independent news rooms,
* outlets relevant to Petaluma and the Bay Area,
* international outlets,
* and, yes, a selection of for-profit outlets.

Many of them are on fedi or Bluesky.

Just for fun, here's how my media diet looks according to Ad Fontes Media, which assesses outlets along two continuum: from left to right, and from fact reporting to falsehoods.

There are some good critiques of their work out there. Of note, its take on political bias is decidedly American.

But it has its utility.

A chart plotting the media outlets that Robin follows along two dimensions: the X axis reflects political bias, and the Y axis reflects a continuum from fact reporting to falsehoods. Robin's media diet is all from the center and to the left, largely clustered around "mix of fact reporting and analysis" with a few venturing into "analysis with variation in reliability."

A 𑐴𑐶𑐟𑐶 (hiti) is an ancient Newah urban water feature: a stepped, sunken courtyard with waterspouts and a central pool. These are fed through a remarkable network of pipes, reservoirs, and irrigation systems drawing water from mountain springs dozens of kilometres away. Every day, hundreds of people from the neighbourhood come to draw water, bathe, and exchange news. They are a unique and precious feature of Newa urban architecture through which neighbourhoods are created.
