I'm torn. On the one hand "Project Hail Mary"! Great book from a great author! On the other hand... Amazon.

I am hoping this time we do bootstrap a Lunar economy it is 60 years since Robert A. Heinlein wrote "The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress" which had mass being launched from the Moon via a linear accelerator I know it was #SciFi but the physics was known & I'd say hard #SciFi within the technical capabilities of the day if we had continued visiting the Moon we could have built it admittedly an AI with a slightly warp SOH😜 is only being born now after sufficient iterations of #MooresLaw but we could have built an equivalent of the Antarctic bases during the last century. I really hope it does not stall again & it does end up being "For All Mankind"

hey everyone, #askfedi, but in particular people who write a lot of #scifi
i am currently partaking in a freeform sci-fi roleplay setting with my friends, where we play as people on a decommissioned "dying town" space station inside an asteroid. my character is a former partisan who fought against a technofascist occupying force and fled here after a tragic loss, and is on the run from the authorities. is there anything i should research to make my character more convincing?

#scifi nerds, I need your help identifying an #SF novel I read decades ago.
The main characters each possess some sort of device which gives them essentially infinite power. They use it to create and destroy whatever they want, to travel all over the planet, basically anything.
They don't understand how the devices work. Turns out they're connected to giant machines—maybe originally for terraforming?—that are starting to break down, and the knowledge of how to fix them has long since been lost.

Reading a 45 year old Star Wars comic about the Rebels coming across a disabled Star Destroyer and boarding it. And the moment someone sees dead Imperial officers turned red, instantly the command goes out to mask up and only let the medical droids touch anything. When they come back to base they immediately set up a containment facility to have everyone checked up by droids.
I have never heard of any such thing happening in a Space Plague story before. What daring writing!
I’ve been listening to Consider Phlebas by Iain M. Banks. It definitely feels a bit like a Traveller adventure, he keeps getting knocked from one bad situation to another. Good read so far.
