#EESmith gives you huge latitude on what counts as marooned, so you're alright.

In the #Skylark series one case was being so far across the universe that the mounting platform for the comms array had to be the size of a planet in order to damp vibration to the point that the beam wasn't wobbling across entire galaxies at the receiving end.

In the #Lensman series one case was being in a different universe where the speed of light was huge, and another was being so far across the multiverse that only True Love could locate which universe Our Hero was in.

Smith was all about going bigger in the next novel. (-:

Taking a cue from #TheStainlessSteelRat, one would have to have:

1. Time-travelling villain who turns out to be doomed from the start because xe actually has a closed loop worldline.

1. Snowball planet. Unexplainedly supports an advanced civilization.

And of course from a wider field of pulp there are many others:

1. Jungle planet, where absolutely everything will eat you, including even some of the rocks. Harrison and Foster did variations on this.

1. Marooned impossibly far from home, at the centre of a supervoid or something. Magically, just like every episode of the A-Team, there are resources from which one can improvise a getting-home machine. Smith did this one several times.

I ask you, does your modern sci-fi RPG of choice allow player characters to rent a cargo submarine? No? Then can it really be called a complete RPG?

🖖 I strongly encourage most Star Trek and sci-fi fans to give 'Starfleet Academy' a chance with an open mind. The season 1 finale was very good IMO.

❌ Don't @ me if you're just going to disagree/troll. It's not a show for everyone but that's OK.

I do actually have more than a few critiques (ship design among them) but overall it's an interesting fresh take on Star Trek that feels accessible to new viewers (a good thing). "Space Hogwarts" is what my partner started calling it and Holly Hunter as "Headmaster" Captain Nahla Ake is a highlight for me, she's quirky and eccentric in such a fun way.

While I've been very slow to learn to like the Discovery spinoff timeline the series is set in — a distant future from established TOS/TNG canon — it's doing better world building and politics than most Trek since the 90s, largely because of the distance from "sacred" canon that nerds get so upset about.

Anyway I'm looking forward to season 2 and haters can suck my antimatter exhaust manifold 🖖🚀

Re-watching Firefly because (a) that will help show them people like it, (2) I like it, and (c) good sci-fi is hard to find. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Hulu has the episodes in the correct order, not the Fox sabotaged order. #television #scifi
