"Human Altitude" by XKCD comic (mirror bots @xkcd @xkcdbot ) - After false starts, in the larger scale of history Humans have rapidly increased the maximum altitude achieved since first taking flight in balloons, then airplanes, then spacecraft. Since the 1970s our maximum altitude has remained in Low Earth Orbit. It goes to show the Cold War competition pushed us to the Moon before we were ready to sustain the effort.
