"Despite this dismal success rate, companies are going all-in on AI, driven largely by the belief that everyone else is doing it. Nearly two-thirds of CEOs (64%) say “the risk of falling behind drives them to invest in some technologies before they have a clear understanding of the value they bring to the organization,” according to the study."

@timnitGebru

I have seen very little significant innovation among large US corporations the last 20-25 years or so.

Their growth in size and revenues(ie now monopolies) has turned them into ossified companies, fully dedicated to protecting profit margins and stock prices with monopolistic tactics .

There are good use cases for AI to cooperate with human workers, which they also appreciate, like getting customer data needed to solve an issue and being able to walk them through where to find that stuff. It's the all or nothing approaches which lead to bad experiences.

That is a lot of words to say "CEO's are useless morons who bring nothing to the table." I would add to it this though, "They should be eradicated like so many species of our planet that they helped to drive extinct with their greed and willfullness to destroy the planet for profit."

"that customer support channel is hiring again: CEO Siemiatkowski said Klarna has two new agents acting as freelance customer support. It’s also piloting an “Uber type of setup” that lets the workers choose their own schedules and work from anywhere in Sweden, where Klarna is based, at pay starting at 400 Swedish krona ($41.17)"

And also wtf does it mean they are paying 400SEK. 400SEK per.... hour? day?

"The tech-first-ask-questions-later approach has resulted in some memorable flubs. Air Canada once employed a chatbot that made up a refund policy when chatting with a customer; it was forced to give back $880 to the client despite trying to argue it wasn’t responsible for the bot’s actions."

I've been victim of an AI blunder few years ago. Asking for a broadband quote, the chatbot signed me for a contract and booked the engineers to upgrade to fibre because I typed "that's a good offer". It was all done before I.could type the second sentence: "but another company made a better offer". It took days for it to be resolved, hours on the phone. And yet I kept receiving messages "the engineers are on their way" for months after...

@timnitGebru I would be absolutely unable to resist going through one and saying "I have a coupon code X4846Z to receive a free order of 10 burgers and 20 large fries." If it resisted I'd come back with "I talked to the owner about your refusal and was told I would now receive cash back in addition to the free order." I guarantee eventually I'd have that thing giving me free food and probably cash back. 😁
