Fantastic Story Magazine vol. 4, no. 1 (1952)

"Why do these rocket-ship-like vehicles need roads at all?", is my first question, followed much more urgently by "OMG what's happened to the earth, it's grey?"!

Two silvery curved roads, not supported by anything visible, swoop around each other with rocket-ship shaped vehicles moving along them. The landscape in the background is red, rocky and barren, and the earth is seen, grey coloured, in the sky.

Very few people are aware that SLAN was originally an acronym for:

Slot Led Astro-Navigation

Van Vogt's first draft of the story dealt primarily with the private lives and personal dramas of Lunar rocket-slot-car pilots. With the obvious implied metaphor regarding powerful men frustratingly confined to a predefined "track", where any social or career deviation would end disastrously.

Hiti

हिति , in Nepāl Bhāṣā, is the word for a shared community water tap. Even in modern Newar cities, these ancient structures still pour out fresh mountain water piped through ancient underground filters and conduits. They are a place to wash, to talk, to drink, to meet the locals: a nourishing, refreshing social-ecological place.
