@iftas@mastodon.iftas.org I was under the impression most Fediverse communities operate just on the whims of some guy hosting a server for his friends. The megaservers need donations to sustain themselves, but in general we shouldn鈥檛 have megaservers to begin with anyway. The Fediverse strives on a large number of small instances, not a small number of large instances.

Reminder to self-host a Fediverse instance, and to spread out across the platform if you鈥檙e able to.

@tyil @iftas I doubt that's true, I expect more users are on big or medium servers than all the small ones combined? And if that's true now, still relatively in the early adoption phase, it can only be more true if we want communities where there is no technical or moderation expertise, both of which need to be done properly or not at all

@iftas

I've said it before and I'll say it again. When someone opens an account on a server (total normie so will no doubt get the nomenclature wrong) there is a process that could include a prompt with an assumed monthly donation that new users could opt out of paying. So, say $2/ month or $5 or whatever. Or you can opt out and click the zero dollar option. Cognitive psychology shows that opt out is a better way to design for human tendancies than opt in systems.

@iftas like Mmmm said, how do we know who the administrator is and how do we donate? At one time, I "think" I found the administrator and I did donate via PayPal but I never felt that I was sending money to the correct person or place.

@rdgit @iftas Getting to know your admin isn't a bad idea in general (for example, do they have an admin account? A discord server? Posts to Patreon? A web site? Etc). I mean you can use this network without that but if something comes up regarding defederation, moderation, etc, it can help to know where they are coming from.
