The military salute originates from the brief removal of the hat as a sign of respect to a superior.
Since grenadiers did not wear hats but caps, they did not have to take off their caps, but could simply tap the cap briefly with their right hand. As Trump wears no hat and is not and never has been in the military, this is a senseless and ridiculous gesture.
