I've just read "Vita Mia", by Dacia Maraini, her account of being imprisoned as a child in a concentration camp in Japan because of her parents refusal to swear allegiance to Mussolini. They were systematically starved by their captors, who stole their food. They ate raw potato peels and grains of rice from their captors' rubbish mixed with hair and tissues. They ate snakes, mice.
