As John Oliver reminded us on his show a week ago, the tipping system in the USA is a problem, because it leaves workers' minimum income dependent on the goodwill of customers, some of whom may be drunk, mean, stupid... or even racist.
In France, we may leave a symbolic sum to show our satisfaction, but workers' income is already guaranteed by their salary.
In other, even more advanced countries, tipping is an insult: wages are enough to live on without charity.
